THE GBSS SCHOOL SONG (contd.)
The prize to the one who earns it
Let this be our golden rule
Endeavour enhances merit
The slacker is folly’s tool.
We are encouraged that to get the prize, we must earn it. This means putting effort into almost everything we do towards success. Earning must be seen in combination with the School Motto: “Non palma sine labore”, and with the next line “endeavor enhances merit”. To me, having merit is having the capacity to constantly achieve success; that capacity must always be sharpened and honed if success is to be achieved. Shakespeare’s words which at some time we all met (or will meet) rings loudly:
“The heights by great men reached and kept
Were not attained by sudden flight
But they, while their companions slept
Were toiling upward in the night”
In later life I appreciated the fact that there are times when considerable effort does not bring the immediate prize, However, the success already achieved by giving oneself the opportunity to effectively compete, and dogged working to keep those successes, build character as well as merit.
The slacker is folly’s tool
To slack in our endeavours moves us away from merit (a success mentality). Here I think the song is speaking to a greater philosophy which carries a warning. Slacking (like endeavor and merit) is a way of thinking. The thoughts we create are beings which, if constantly nourished, can control our outlook and predisposition, and eventually our lives.
* And so (in continued endeavour) I eagerly await your comments!!!
